Aches and pains shouldn’t stop you from doing what you love. This week is all about boosting your flexibility and mobility, so you kick pain to the curb.
Flexibility is about more than simply being able to touch your toes (or ace a sit-and-reach test). It’s really about moving with ease.
Well-stretched muscles are freer to move through their range of motion. And that can help with any activity, from reaching overhead for a mug, swinging a golf club, or rolling out of bed. Most important: Developing flexibility can help reduce aches and pains, especially as we get older.
“As we age, our muscles, bones and joints go through changes that can bring on pain and stiffness,” says SilverSneakers LIVE instructor Shannon Thigpen. Tight muscles can also put strain on nearby joints, putting you at risk of injury. (And nobody has time for that!)
The key to combatting these changes—and staying safe—is to stay active. Our experts here at SilverSneakers know just how to help. “There are simple things you can do every day to soothe stiff joints and loosen tight muscles,” says Shannon.
That’s why we’ve put together seven days of feel-good activities to boost your flexibility and mobility, and help you kick pain to the curb. This way, you can keep up with the people, places, and activities you love most.
Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in store this week:
- The 4-1-1 on how and when to stretch
- Key exercises to ease knee pain
- A mini version of our popular SilverSneakers Stability class that focuses on improving balance
- Shannon’s favorite feel-good moves
- An easy-to-follow yoga routine to soothe sore hips and backs
- Plus, recommendations for SilverSneakers LIVE and in-person classes to keep the momentum going
How the 7-Day Move Better, Feel Better Challenge Works
The challenge is open to everyone, including SilverSneakers members and non-members. You can follow along here on the SilverSneakers blog to see the latest.
We’ll be posting a new workout and/or exercise option each day for the next seven days. You’ll only need yourself, some open floor space, and a sturdy chair for standing support. You may also want to have a glass of water handy. Feel free to pause and take a sip whenever you need.
As always, safety is key. The exercises here may be different or more advanced than your regular SilverSneakers class. If you have a chronic condition, an injury, or balance issues, talk to your doctor about how you can exercise safely.
