Your fitness goals may be personal but working out with others can give you a burst of motivation — and a performance edge.
To celebrate our 30th anniversary, we’ve put together the Journey to 30 Challenge! It’s four weeks of summer-fun activities to help you stay active, connect with the SilverSneakers community, and have a total blast doing it. This is Activity No. 17. Group fitness classes are more than fun — they have a big impact on your health, too. That’s because the healthy actions of others have a spillover effect.
Workout buddies can help:
Hold you accountable. You’re far less likely to skip a workout when you know another person is counting on you. In fact, research shows you’re more likely to clock more exercise time when you make a plan to exercise with others, according to a study by the Society of Behavioral Medicine.
Push your performance. When researchers asked study participants to do a series of planks alone and again with a workout partner, they were able to hold the planks longer when in the company of their fit pal. The findings were published in the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology.
Reach your weight loss goals. One study published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, found that 95 percent of people who started a weight-loss program with friends completed it, compared to 76 percent of those who attempted it alone.
Elevate the fun factor. When researchers at the University of Southern California asked people to track their mood during physical activity, those who worked out with friends or a partner said they enjoyed the activity more than solo exercisers.
Knowing all of this makes today’s activity a no-brainer.
