The holidays are a great time to spend with family and friends! But that usually means there are plenty of treats, which creates a challenge in staying active and keeping up with our nutrition. If you head into the holidays with a few trick (and healthy treats) up your sleeve, you won’t have to start over come Jan. 1.

Here are a few tips to remember:

Hit the buffet, then stay away

If you’re attending a holiday party with a buffet table, make your plate and head to a different room so you can focus more on your company and less on those irresistible sweets.

Make a (secretly healthy) holiday recipe

Almond butter, quinoa, coconut flour and sunflower seed butter can create healthier alternatives to your favorite recipes. Check online for recipes. You can even try out these fun recipes.

Start with a snack

You know how dangerous it is to go grocery shopping when you’re hungry? It’s equally risky heading to a holiday party in that state. Have a healthy snack before you go so you’re not tempted to over-indulge.

Load up on veggies, not sweets

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, eating for health should take precedence. Look for veggies in a variety of colors to give your body valuable nutrients.

The season is a time to reflect on what good things we have, and you should be able to enjoy a few snacks, but don’t overdo it and wreck all the hard work you’ve done on your fitness goals this year! Share some tips on staying healthy with us on Facebook.
