Workshop Descriptions and Fees

  • Fee is waived for the first two instructors from each participating location pre-registering for MSROM workshop only.
  • $30/workshop, if pre-registered and pre-paid.

SilverSneakers® Muscular Strength & Range of Movement
Muscular Strength & Range of Movement is the core class of the SilverSneakers Group Exercise Program. A variety of support positions with a chair are introduced to increase strength and range of movement conditioning exercises. Functional improvement is the focus of this creative multi-level conditioning class and includes a variety of basic choreography with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and the SilverSneakers ball.

SilverSneakers® Cardio Circuit
Cardio Circuit is for participants who have expressed a desire for more cardiovascular and muscular endurance conditioning and have demonstrated above baseline proficiencies in agility, balance and coordination. Cardio Circuit offers standing non-impact choreography alternated with standing upper-body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a SilverSneakers ball. Cardio Circuit focuses on the benefits of a circuit format to improve cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength and endurance without increasing risk. The workshop includes class format objectives, teaching skills and choreography to promote safe, non-impact aerobic activity alternated with upper-body strength training, safe and effective movement transitions, and exercise recommendations for risk management. SilverSneakers® CardioFit
The CardioFit workshop is designed for instructors who want a safe, effective low-impact cardiovascular workout to teach active adults. A variety of easy-to-follow movements promote heart healthy, total-body conditioning improvements to increase cardiovascular and muscular endurance. CardioFit is perfect for participants who are fit and active, as well as those who want a safe, effective and energizing activity. Hand-held weights or elastic tubing with handles can be used for the strength training segment that follows the “cardio” segment. The SilverSneakers chair offers stability or support options for abdominal and stretching exercises from the floor.

SilverSneakers® Resistance Tool Choreography Design
Learn advanced choreography from a variety of support positions with resistance tools while networking with other instructors teaching the SilverSneakers classes. The workshop focus is on safe, effective and creative muscular conditioning options utilizing hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, the SilverSneakers ball and a chair for seated and standing support. Choreography ideas for creating compound movement options and exercise transitions are introduced to provide additional functional movement combinations for older adults.

SilverSneakers® SilverSplash
SilverSplash is Healthways total body aqua conditioning class in a pool. SilverSplash focuses on increasing agility, range of movement and cardiovascular conditioning. No swimming ability is required.  The workshop includes: class format objectives, water safety and risk management recommendations, and shallow water movement choreography with the SilverSneakers kickboard to develop strength, balance and coordination. Bring your swimsuit, towel and water bottle!

SilverSneakers® Essentials
Leading, teaching, managing and performing blend together to create the style of an instructor. The Essentials Workshop is designed to develop the communication and organizational skills necessary to balance the diverse needs of older adults exercising in a group setting. Instructors will learn and be evaluated on six baseline skills for teaching physical activity movement: verbal and non verbal communication skills, form, music identity, movement presentation and progression technique. Bring your energy and a desire to re-focus learning "the basics" to develop your personal style of  teaching through the fundamental building blocks for "fitness, fun and friends." The Essentials Workshop is for all instructors who desire additional practical physical education training and feedback from the Healthways training staff.

SilverSneakers® YogaStretch
YogaStretch is the newest SilverSneakers class for you and your participants. You will learn how to teach a blend of three Yoga styles to create a harmony of movement for the whole body. YogaStretch is taught from a seated and standing position to enhance the flow and energy created in combination with restorative breathing exercises. The class offers a variety of safe and effective options designed to increase flexibility and balance to improve each individual's sense of well being. You will love teaching YogaStretch to your SilverSneakers participants with our newest format style for fitness, fun and friends!

SilverSneakers® YogaStretch:Part II
YogaStretch: Part II – Choreography & Restorative Breathing Development offers new breathing exercises, poses, cues and relaxation techniques to expand your YogaStretch teaching options. Learn essential information on the importance of breathing and how to safely present progressive breathing techniques. Network with YogaStretch instructors while learning more movement combinations, smooth transitions and meaningful cues to increase verbal communication specific for older adults.

SilverSneakers® YogaStretch:III
YogaStretch: Part III – Yoga for Health & Healing offers new breathing exercises, poses, modified Sun Salutation and hand mudras to expand your YogaStretch teaching options. Learn essential information about the Six Dimensions of Wellness and the influence that yoga has upon overall well-being. Discover how yoga’s holistic approach to healing can minimize the effects of chronic disease and maximize healthful living.

SilverSneakers® Functional Fitness Assessments
The Functional Fitness Assessments workshop is for instructors and participating location staff interested in evaluating SilverSneakers participants on functional abilities. The objectives of the SilverSneakers Functional Fitness Assessment Test are to increase participation by engaging participants in a prolonged testing period and to measure the improvements made by the participants. Seven tests are presented in this workshop to assess cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, body composition, agility, balance and coordination: 6-Minute Walk, Scratch Test, Biceps Curl, Waist to Hip Ratio/Body Mass Index, Chair Stand, Functional Reach, and 8-Foot Up and Go. This workshop includes all facets on how to prepare for, operationalize, and implement these SilverSneakers® functional fitness testing assessments in a participating location.

SilverSneakers® Exceptional Communication & Leadership
Exceptional Communication & Leadership is designed to introduce instructors and participating location staff to a variety of communication skills and motivational leadership techniques. This interactive lecture based professional development workshop includes: participant readiness, verbal and non-verbal cueing, exercise progression and program implementation processes based on Healthways recommendations and guidelines for increased participation and retention.

SilverSneakers® Nutrition for Older Adults
Nutrition for Older Adults is a lecture presentation on the science of nutrition and provides instructors and participating location staff with the latest and most accurate information on the special dietary needs of older adults. Effects of aging, cellular absorption rates, decreased thermoregulation processes, the effects of drugs, Type 2 diabetes and vitamin deficiencies, fads and fallacies are discussed.

SilverSneakers® Strong Bones & Muscles Are Worth the Weight
Strong Bones & Muscles Are Worth the Weight focuses on the effects of aging and the benefits of exercise on bones, muscles and connective tissue as it relates to fall prevention and osteoporosis. Resistance tool choreography options with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and the SilverSneakers ball are demonstrated with recommendations relative to risk versus benefit challenges for increasing muscular strength and endurance, agility, balance and coordination. The workshop includes: current information on biomechanical improvements to minimize age related agility, balance and coordination physical degeneration, current research on fall prevention interventions and choreography techniques to improve stability, rotational and dynamic movement patterns.

SilverSneakers® TLC
Tendons, Ligaments, and Cartilage Movement for Older Adults come together in and around the joints and the muscles of your body. This workshop is a SilverSneakers Fitness Program professional development course designed to explore movement options for older adults, using and preserving the network of connective tissues to support structure. Learn the effects of aging, and how the impact of structural instabilities, disease and disability creates a need for more knowledge in strengthening and caring for the skeletal support systems of the body. This workshop includes new group exercise movement techniques for older adults to enhance joint stability and muscle balance through the intersection of tendons, ligaments and cartilage. Exercise recommendations and safety modifications will be given using handheld weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a SilverSneakers ball. Walk away with expert knowledge on connective tissue anatomy and how to implement new movement in your classes to insure joint stability and injury prevention.
